Most historians consider the Escalante River the last major river discovered in the lower 48 states by surveyors The Escalante River continues for approximately 75 miles downstream from highway 12 before it enters Lake Powell. The river winds through both Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

The efforts of rain and wind, created the breathtaking canyons, arches and other wonders comprise the Grand Staircase Monument.

Glen Canyon on Lake Powell can be explored by boat but not near Escalante. If you have time for only one full day hike, try the nature trail to Calf Creek Falls. This 6 mile round-trip hike leads along Calf Creek to a 126-foot high waterfall deep in a canyon carved out of the Navajo sandstone. You can see archaeological sites, both rock art and small granaries. Park at the Calf Creek Recreation Area on Highway 12, 15 miles east of Escalante. Day-use fee. During busy weekends it may be difficult to find a parking spaces.
