The Hole-in-the-Rock route was constructed by Mormon pioneers during the famous Hole In the Rock Expedition of 1878-1880 for their journey across the Colorado River to establish the San Juan Mission.

Today the gravel-surfaced road is 57 miles one way to a spectacular overlook of Lake Powell: the Hole-in-the-Rock. Standard passenger vehicles can drive the upper portion of the road, although the last six miles to the Hole-in-the-Rock require a high clearance four-wheel drive vehicle.

The Hole-In-The-Rock Road is located five miles east of Escalante, off Highway 12, and provides access to Devil's Garden, Escalante Canyon trailheads, Dance Hall Rock, and a vista of Lake Powell. From Escalante to the end of the road and back is a daylong trip. (4 ½ to 5 hours one way. Very hot in summer, carry water and food in case of car problems)
